In the dynamic world of oil and gas, the construction sector is crucial for developing and maintaining both upstream and downstream projects. With over 19 years of experience in domestic and international construction, including significant roles in Malaysia, Vietnam, South Korea, and Iraq, my career has been defined by a blend of technical expertise, strategic management, and adaptive problem-solving. This essay reflects on the multifaceted nature of my work and the insights gained from nearly two decades of diverse experiences.
I began my career in the oil and gas industry working in Malaysia's domestic upstream offshore operations. My initial experience involved the operation and maintenance of offshore platforms, including interfacing with pipeline installation works, drilling and workover activities, and well interventions. Additionally, I have managed or at least played leading roles in 24 integrated shutdown/turnaround campaigns, where coordinating complex tasks and ensuring minimal downtime was crucial. Managing these activities required a comprehensive understanding of marine logistics and operational safety, as well as the ability to coordinate complex tasks involving multiple teams. This foundational experience provided me with a solid grounding in offshore construction and operations, equipping me with the skills needed to address challenges in high-risk environments.
Building on my domestic experience, my career expanded internationally, taking me to Vietnam where I worked on offshore upstream projects. In Vietnam, I managed the construction of offshore platforms and drilling rigs in the South China Sea. This role involved dealing with harsh weather conditions, handling complex logistics, and ensuring compliance with both local and international environmental standards. Coordinating with multidisciplinary teams and managing the installation of infrastructure in a remote and demanding environment further refined my skills in logistical planning and risk management.
In South Korea, my role shifted to the engineering and procurement phase for a major petrochemical project. Working within an engineering and procurement center, I focused on designing and procuring equipment for a large-scale petrochemical plant. This experience required meticulous planning and coordination to ensure that all components met stringent safety and efficiency standards required for the downstream sector. The successful completion of this phase was critical for the subsequent construction phase, which was executed in Malaysia.
The construction phase for the petrochemical plant took place in Malaysia's southern region. Overseeing this large-scale downstream project involved managing the entire construction process, from site preparation to the installation of complex systems and infrastructure. Ensuring that the project adhered to tight timelines and budget constraints while meeting safety and environmental regulations was a significant challenge. This experience enhanced my capabilities in coordinating large teams and handling multifaceted construction challenges, reinforcing my project management skills.
In Iraq, I focused on onshore upstream projects, managing construction in a volatile region. The work involved building and maintaining extraction facilities under challenging conditions, requiring me to navigate the geopolitical landscape and adhere to local regulations. This experience reinforced the need for robust safety protocols and risk management strategies tailored to high-risk environments. Adapting to rapidly changing conditions and effectively managing resources was crucial for the successful completion of these projects.
Throughout my career, safety and risk management have been paramount. Whether working offshore in Malaysia, in the complex environments of Vietnam and Iraq, or managing domestic projects, the high-risk nature of the oil and gas industry necessitates rigorous safety protocols and risk assessments. My experience in developing and implementing comprehensive safety measures and training programs has been crucial in ensuring the protection of personnel and minimizing environmental impact.
Technological advancements have significantly influenced my work. From advanced offshore construction techniques in Malaysia and Vietnam to state-of-the-art refining technologies in South Korea, staying current with innovations has been a key aspect of my role. Evaluating and integrating new technologies has helped optimize construction practices and enhance project outcomes across various environments.
Effective project management has been central to my approach. Managing large-scale construction projects requires strategic planning, coordination, and execution. My experience across diverse locations, including offshore Malaysia, the high-risk conditions in Iraq, and the petrochemical plant construction in Malaysia’s southern region, has highlighted the importance of strategic planning and resource management to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.
Leadership and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams have also been essential. Coordinating efforts across different departments and stakeholders requires strong leadership and communication skills. Leading teams in international settings like South Korea and Vietnam, as well as domestic projects in Malaysia, has reinforced the importance of fostering collaboration and resolving conflicts effectively to achieve project success.
Sustainability and environmental stewardship have become increasingly important in my work. Adapting to global sustainability goals and local environmental regulations has been crucial. In Vietnam, implementing eco-friendly practices for offshore operations and in Malaysia, ensuring compliance with local environmental standards for both upstream and downstream projects, have been key aspects of my role.
In conclusion, my career spanning over 19 years in domestic and international construction within the oil and gas industry has been marked by diverse experiences and expertise. From starting with offshore platform operations and maintenance in Malaysia, including managing 21 integrated shutdown campaigns, to managing projects in Vietnam, South Korea, and Iraq, and overseeing downstream projects in Malaysia, my journey has shaped my professional growth. The successful certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP) by PMI and as a Professional Technologist (P.Tech) by MBOT recognizes my skills and ability to undertake larger, more complex roles in the industry. My proficiency in safety, project management, leadership, and sustainability underscores my critical role in advancing the oil and gas construction sector.
